COLD and wet conditions greeted agents and buyers on Wednesday at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, but failed to dampen the mood, with all categories registering price rises.

Fifty-six bullocks were yarded, less than half of last week’s offering. The good quality in this category saw prices remain firm to strong with the average rising to 161.2 and top bullock made to 170 cents.

Forty-eight heifers also remained firm and averaged slightly higher than last sale, making 144.4. This week’s best sale in heifers was 193.2.

One hundred and 24 steers were penned and were the only category to slip on average. There was a larger percentage of lighter quality head in this category compared with last Wednesday.

That tended to recalculate to a slight lift in prices as the fat sale last week contained better quality steers; the top steer made to 188.2 with the average easing four cents to 160.

Five hundred and eight vealers contained a larger portion of better quality head. This, coupled with stronger demand, equated to a 6 per cent rise on average to 184.3. The highest price paid was 238 cents and this was achieved for the top eight on offer.

Demand for bulls and cows on Thursday still remains high, with bulls this week rising 13 cents to 154.1 cents. Sale of the day was a good heavy Limo bull weighting in at 1090 kilograms to sell for 172 cents with a return price of $1874.

Five hundred and 15 cows were yarded with heavy conditioned cows selling 20 to 30 cents dearer, and light score cows five to 10 cents dearer.

The overall market averaged 128.1 cents with a top of 165.2.

The draw for Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 June is: 1, Gibbon; 2, Elders; 3, Landmark; 4, Scotts; 5, SEJ.
